While reading "Moon Dance", I was taken to another time and place. Through the lives of Maggie and Joe, I became involved in the lives of two families and the hardships they each faced. I also enjoyed the love that drew them together and continued to grow despite the difficulties. With each new chapter, I was anxious to see what new adventures were in store for the characters.

Susan K. Earl has done an excellent job with her story "Moon Dance." Not only does she portray several characters and their families, she has intertwined faith, hard work, strength, courage, and forgiveness throughout their lives. This is not only a good read for entertainment, but also one that we can learn from. Great job!
The Power to Never Give Up
Moon Dance by author, Susan Earl, is a believable story about the life of people who survived the Great Depression. Set in the countryside near Fort Worth, Texas, Moon Dance is about a girl of strong character named Maggie. Readers will be impressed with the gamet of emotions Maggie's family endures. It is my belief that readers will become invested in Maggie and her family. Mrs. Earl weaves descriptions of the sweltering Texas heat that puts the readers in the midst of the action. The story is about family, romance, anger, and loss. I recommend this book for the depth of its content.

Maggie knew times were hard for everyone, so being poor was the norm, especially during the Depression. But things changed drastically on the day her uncle died in a car accident. But in the midst of poverty, her father's abandonment and caring for seven younger siblings, Maggie finds peace in God and love in Joe. Through the ups and downs of life, Maggie's and Joe's love grows.

I liked the book. It was well-written, alternating between Maggie's first person and Joe's third person perspectives. However, at certain points, especially the beginning, I felt like there were some minor details that were missing. Some new event or character would show up without explanation to the story, so it took awhile to get the connection. For example, I wouldn't have known the story took place in Texas without the back cover summary. I knew it was the south because of the characters' dialect, but nothing specifically said "Texas" to me.

But the characters were realistic, as was the romance, not overly embellished like some other stories. I felt sad when Maggie was sad and happy when she was happy. A lovely story.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the novel, Moon Dance, by Author Susan Earl. It is very easy to discern that Susan is passionate about her relationship with God as she so skillfully intertwines her own values in her novel about Maggie and Joe. The story takes place in Texas during the Great Depression yet despite the poverty and hardship that so many people endured; Maggie and Joe manage to find love and romance. Although, the main plot of Moon Dance revolves around the love they share, there are many other delightful characters that enhance the story line. There is much sadness and sorrow that is also addressed in this well-written, descriptive novel, but the faith of the family and the love that they all share manages to bring it to a happy conclusion. This book grabbed my attention right from the onset and I enjoyed it immensely.

Susan K. Earl has written a very appealing book about people who lived in Texas during the Great Depression. The dialect is believable and the narrative follows the factual living conditions during the Depression.

"That day, that dreadful day began it all, yet there was nothing else to do except what my mama did, because in her eyes she had no other choice. My aunt Rachel had two small children and no job, nor any hope of one for that matter, what with the Depression going on. What else could we have done? I have asked myself this question a thousand times since that day Aunt Rachel and her girls moved in with us, but every action has a reaction, so they say."

The story centers around two families, the Bowens and Gilleys, who have been friends for years. The two oldest children, Maggie and Joe, in the respective families, fall in love and get married. Their courtship is often interrupted by the younger siblings teasing them, but they take it good naturedly. The families support them and share their sage advice for a happy life together.
The trials of the poverty during the Depression in small town Texas are well documented by the author, but she also describes the abundant love and faith of the characters that get them through the hard times. Most of the time they don't realize they are in a Depression.
There is another aspect to the story that deals with abuse by Maggie's father against Maggie and her mother. The story line is no different from other abuse stories; the abuser drinks and always says he is sorry afterward, the abused person wants to believe that it won't happen again, forgives the abuser and then it happens again. In this story, Maggie cannot forgive her father for what he did to her mother, but was able to forgive, although not forget, what he did to her. Her mother was able to forgive him and go on with her life, supporting and loving her children.
The happiness and tragedies in the two families' lives are intertwined. They all have an abiding faith that helps them through the misfortunes and heartbreak and a love of life that makes them enjoy the happy times.
I really enjoyed the storyline and the realistic characters, but the author's transition from Texas dialect to a normal narrative after the first chapter is a distraction that requires the reader to adjust to the change. Personally, I found the dialect more realistic.
This book is one I would recommend to young adults and older people for an enjoyable read. The most objectionable part of it is the abuse, but it is handled with tact and sensitivity.
Susan K. Earl is from East Texas. She has been an educator for 25 years and now has written a lovely book to be read and re-read. She lives in Central Texas with her husband, her cat and her dog.
