Enjoyed this first novel by the author,I was intrigued with the world building, especially The Church and its relationship with the rulers and the perception of magic among the commoners. While The Church doesn’t have a big role in the story line yet you can see it coming.
One of the strongest aspects of the story is the characterization. I like it when an author allows their characters develop and respond and change after, in some cases, life changing events. The characters in the story truly react in believable ways after horrible things happen. I won’t ruin the review with names but, there are several minor characters that I hope have larger roles in future stories.
Many of the characters in the story aren’t your typical cookie cutter warriors, and damsels in distress. Even the “heavies” , like King Havalon, have redeeming qualities. In fact I really liked King Havalon and how he was handled in the story.
The combat is fast and in some cases brutal and I love how the author dealt with large scale battles, giving you just enough information to know what is going on without bogging down the flow of the story with minutiae. Loved the siege scenes, it was at that point that I thought the author really started to settle in to the story.
While this book does end, you can tell there is much more to come and I can’t wait.

A really awesome start to this series that I will definitely be continuing! I'd categorize this series as being an action packed, dark fantasy read. At times I found myself loving the main characters and at others, not so much--they weren't perfect which I really liked and I think this makes them seem more relatable. I enjoyed the length of this book as well, it was entertaining throughout and it wasn't a short read like some other series on that just try to get you to buy book after book. Overall, really enjoyed!
This book was written with great potential and brings the reader in to be captivated with attention to detail.Then the unthinkable happens either the author went insane or the author wrote the worst plot ending ever, it completely turn the whole vibe off !! This story line went from a great read to a disappointing one and very predictable ending !!! This book is a waste of time and money !!
I am a fan of the fantasy genre and pretty much appreciate all of the sub-genres that lie within it. There is so much that can be done in fantasy that I can't seem to get enough of it if the story is original enough and the characters are well-developed. Author A.J. Strickler has what promises to be the start to an amazing fantasy series with his "Gods of Blood and Fire", the first book in this series. There are several main characters here but much centers on Kian and Princess Raygan. Kian is great warrior who comes home to find that things have changed drastically. The new leader, Princess Raygan, enlists him and his two mercenary friends to help with an epic task. This was an incredible story, full of some awesome action sequences and a great story line that I can't wait to continue into the next book. Very well written.
As a long time reader of fantasy, I very much enjoyed the depth of the characters in this story...and how likable many are painted - from the heroic Kian, naively walking into a new world after being secluded from it for a lifetime, to the two sell-swords who have a quirky, but realistic dynamic to them that calls one to believe them old war buddies by the way the treat one another, but then when the swords start flying, they work in concert. The 'Dark One' and his apprentice have traits which, even knowing that they are pretty vile people, somehow endear them to the reader. I very much enjoyed all the characters and the author does a nice job of setting things up for them to evolve.
The story, as whole, is well crafted, but unlike some of the genre which tend to bog down in details and fluff for a book this size, the pace is more deliberate and moving, and while it does weave from the story of one character to another, the reader doesn't have to wait for the next book to see where some of those tales weave together, which is refreshing. There is political intrigue, there are personal stories and arcs, love, comedy and action.
The action / battle sequences were well done - from the independent fighting to the large scale battles. Good descriptive combat that was easy to follow and felt very cinematic.
All in all, this was an enjoyable romp through the land of high fantasy with action, wit and a grand story told through the eyes of endearing characters makes this a win for the genre.
There are some issues with the book - the depth of the characters varies a lot, especially in the first third of the book where the band of warriors are fairly complex characters but the princess and prince are extremely one-dimensional. As the story moves on characters often change too suddenly, like one moment one character clearly doesn't trust or like another and 10 pages later takes a risky stand supporting that character to 110%.
The author could probably have done a better job pulling the different plots in the same direction, now many of the plots "break the flow" of the main story; I was especially annoyed with how a sorcerer was allowed to just teleport in and kidnap characters multiple times, teleporting them a great distance away so other characters had to travel a long way to save them (nevermind that there doesn't seem to be anything preventing the sorcerer from teleporting again). Overall I felt there were too many plots and that they were not as integrated as they should have been to form one big, coherent plot.
Personally I don't care much for graphical rape and sexual torture in my books; It also feels a bit cheap to have such one-dimensional villains and weird considering how the author has the protagonist struggling with his "dark side".
With all that said I can still recommend the book - just take all the 5 star ratings with a pinch of salt.
