Note: Do not read this book if you’re looking for something along the lines of a Grisham novel. While there is most certainly a trial involved, it is not the main point of the book. This is a book about morals, values, how the choices we make affect ourselves and others, and how we may seek retribution for our wrongs. With that caveat out of the way, let’s begin.

The first thing of note is that the story of Garrett Palmer does not begin with his trial, or even with Garrett himself. It begins with his mother, and the story of her growing troubles with Garrett’s father. As Garrett grows up, learns to play football and becomes a sizable young man, he begins to realize just how troubled their relationship has gotten. After seeing his mother hurt by his father, he takes leave of his senses and nearly kills the man. And while he doesn’t go through with it, the incident changes him forever. In just one brief instant in which his inhibitions nearly fail him, he begins to trudge the path of a born criminal.

After this, the story flashes forward to the trial in question. But it doesn’t stay there. The timeline bounces around a bit, talking about Garrett’s life with his wife (and key witness) Simona. It also explores his life in school, when he and Simona first met. This is not just a character study, but an integral plot element. The entire life of Garrett Palmer is important to his trial. This may not make much sense, but the book description given above actually drops a major hint as to why this is the case.

That brings us to the most important aspect of this book: the ending. A major twist occurs in the last few chapters, one which helps the reader to make sense of the stranger aspects of the story. It is a difficult twist to pull off, but the author handles it quite well. The last few paragraphs of the book may not sit quite right with some readers depending on their personal values, but others will find them highly inspiring. This was a truly unique book and, while it could have benefited from some thorough editing services to handle the various misspellings and grammar issues, the prose itself makes this book worthy of a five-star review. Definitely worth a read.

The Trial of Garrett Palmer edition by Terrance J Pinckney Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

The Trial of Garrett Palmer was not at all what I expected. This isn't your typical courtroom drama where the defendant's legal team is pulling out all the stops to get their client a "Not Guilty" verdict. Instead, the author has chosen to delve deeper into the moral aspects of Garrett's life, and the events that led him to a life of crime. Soon his entire life can be condensed into a moral themed dilemma where good hearts with good intentions cross bad decisions surrounded by terribly immoral circumstances where innocent people suffer.

Garrett is brought up in a home life that should have been warm and encouraging, but his father has discovered that Garrett isn't truly his son, rather a product of his mother's indiscretion years ago. Garrett's mother spends most of his formative years attempting to be the buffer between Garrett and his father's hatred. His father makes certain that Garrett is singled out and treated poorly with no encouragement and plenty of harshly, negative reinforcement. His choice to lead a life of crime is not necessarily a direct consequence of his mother's past mistakes or his father's treatment, and I think that was the point of the book. Though his circumstances were grim, Garrett always had a choice when it came to a life of crime or a life filled with good choices.

Spoiler Alert

His relationship with the boss's daughter was a little heartbreaking and doomed to failure. I also think it was a cruel twist of fate when the identity of his wife's killer was revealed, and I wish the author would have taken a moment for Garrett to mentally acknowledge that his biological father had killed his wife even though that was obvious to the reader. I think it would have been a poignant moment for the characters and for the plot if his father, once he recognized who Garrett was, made that connection and had a real moment of complete horror at the realization that he'd killed his son's wife. It would have illustrated beautifully one of the themes of this book, that many innocent victims suffer due to immoral decisions made by men bent on revenge or profit.

In the end Garrett is on trial for the ultimate freedom, and God is the only one who can acquit him of his previous actions provided he truly repents of those things he did in the past and radically changes his life. It's the trial of his immortal soul, and a very compelling premise to base this narrative upon. I thought the pacing of this book was really great, but I would suggest to the author that he give us a better idea of the timeline since the various chapters jump back and forth rather than revealing the action in a more linear fashion. It was a little confusing and took me some time to figure out where I was in relation to how old Garrett was. Maybe putting something under the chapter headings like "3 years later" or "10 months previously" or "present day" would be in order. It would definitely help readers to know exactly where they are in the timeline without finally figuring it out a few pages into the chapters and missing key parts of the narrative.

I also think that this read was fairly quick, and I wouldn't have complained if the author had spent more time developing Garrett's relationship with his wife once he was reunited with her as a teenager. Watching him grow in the ranks of the crime syndicate would have been awesome as well, giving rise to opportunities for more character development and stronger bonds between his coworkers and his boss. As it stands, the book is engrossing and meant to prove a moral point which it does in a most impressive way, but I would have liked a lot more detail and set-up I guess. I loved the characters and wanted more time with them.

This book illuminates those age old questions of whether or not our actions do matter in the grand scheme of things, and if a person can be so far gone as to be completely lost to the redeeming love that God wishes to afford to his children. I highly recommend this book to those searching for answers to those questions.
